I made "Deluxe Oatmeal" in my crockpot last night. I was paranoid that it would set the house on fire, especially since Mr Historian disabled our smoke detector because it wouldn't stop shrieking, so I didn't sleep that well. When I woke up for the 10th time, at about 5 am, I shut it off. Why would oatmeal really need to cook for 8 hours anyway, really? And it was a little overdone...but it was pretty tasty, and fancier oatmeal than I would ever have bothered to make otherwise, with dried apricots (because I had no raisins), sliced almonds, milk and applesauce (in place of chopped apples).

So the original crock pot stoneware insert piece is very dairy now. It's white, and I was just able to order a black one to use as the meat one. ([livejournal.com profile] mitchellf, I don't know if you ever looked into whether you can use the same crock pot base to cook with separate meat and dairy inserts, but I'm declaring it kosher.) Of course the black one costs more than I paid Mr Historian paid for the entire crockpot, but whatever. Once it arrives, I'm never going to cook with anything else again! And I can use my fire safety paranoia to help me get the house cleaned and do my homework in the middle of the night, since I won't be able to sleep. What a system!

The oatmeal sounds yummy! Got a recipe? I'll probably stick to the packets, my spouse doesn't like the stuff.

All good--all kosher (so long as the base has had time to cool down between dairy vs meat usages). It kind of works like an oven or stove top. Declaring an oven or burner to be "dairy" or "meat" is absolutely ludicrous--obviously. :-)

Have fun. Hmmm...that's kind of a good idea, maybe I should talk Vekson112 into that ('specially after he just bought us a new crock pot and then, immediately, made it meat).

I finally have the recipe handy:
Makes 4 cups (8 servings).
Grease the inside of the crockpot.
Stick the ingredients in there and mix well:
2 c milk
1/4 c brown sugar
1 T butter, melted
1/4 t salt
1/2 t cinnamon
1 c oats
1 c finely chopped apple (I used applesauce)
1/2 c raisins or dates (I used chopped dried apricots)
1/2 c chopped walnuts or almonds

Cover & turn on low heat, cooking overnight. Stir before serving. (It seemed to me that overnight was overkill--3-4 hours was probably plenty--so if you wanted to run it overnight, maybe add extra liquid or something?)

You know, oatmeal that's deluxe, i.e. has a bunch of extra junk in it.
