Why, yes, I was going to spend the evening outdoors anyway. But I don't think this was quite what God had in mind for a Sukkot observance.

I was outside decorating the sukkah, Mr. Archaeologist was leaving to go play with a new band, and he locked me out of the house. No problem, I thought, since our friends around the block have a key. I walked over there, and though there were lights on and two hyperactive dogs wagging their tails and lunging at me through the door, no humans were home to give me a key. Another guy on that street who we always see walking his little dog let me use his phone, but Mr. A didn't answer his cell phone. Great. I went home, swept the deck under the sukkah, and saw that there was a pencil on the patio table. I could leave the friends-with-key a note for when they get home. No paper. Crap. But there were some two-by-four scraps...so I picked a 6" one and wrote them a note on that, walked all the way back to their house, where they still weren't home, so I propped the 2X4 up on their doorknob, driving their dogs nuts, and walked all the way home. I decided that since I at least had the shed key in my pocket, I could get out the ladder and try to get in through a window...none of which were open except the bathroom one, which wasn't going to be yanked open any further. I managed to knock out the screen and break the shoddy latch on one of the front windows (in Mr. A's room) and climb in that way. Stampy didn't like seeing a burglar come in his room, even if it is the burglar who feeds him and lets him drink out of the sink, so he ran away. But I finally got back into my own damn house.

So I left the 2X4 neighbors a "disregard" message and invited them over for Sukkot dinner tomorrow. Now I'm exhausted and need to stare at the TV. I think I'll let Sukkot begin tomorrow.
